Sell a broken or damaged car in Denmark: what it is worth and how to sell it

How a broken car is valued

A buyer looks at three things: what the car would be worth running, what it costs to get it there, and what it is worth as parts or scrap if repair does not make sense. A 2014 Golf with a failed dual-clutch gearbox and a good body is worth considerably more than its scrap value, because the body and interior have value even if the gearbox is replaced or the car is broken for parts. A 2004 Fiesta with the same problem is a scrap car.

The floor is the scrapping premium: 2,770 DKK in 2026 for a deregistered car delivered to an approved dismantler. Anything above that depends on make, model, age and which parts are still good. Popular models, diesel engines with documented mileage, and cars with recent tyres, batteries or brakes are worth more.

Mechanical faults versus accident damage

Engine or gearbox failure in a car that otherwise looks good is the most common case. Tell us what happened: warning lights, noises, whether the car still starts, and whether a workshop has diagnosed it. A diagnosis is useful but not necessary — do not pay 1,500 DKK for one just to sell the car.

Accident damage is judged by whether the car has been declared a total loss by an insurer, whether airbags have deployed, and how much of the structure is affected. If your insurer has already settled and you have kept the wreck, it can still be sold; tell us whether the car is registered or deregistered.

Water, fire or theft damage usually means scrap value, but the car still has to be collected and scrapped correctly, and we do that too.

Should you repair it before selling?

Almost never. A repair rarely adds its own cost to the sale price, and a car with a fresh repair invoice for a major fault makes buyers suspicious rather than reassured. The exception is a small, cheap fix that turns a non-runner into a runner, for example a battery, because a car that starts and moves is easier to value and to collect. Ask us before you spend anything.

Collection of a car that does not drive

We collect broken and non-running cars anywhere in Denmark on a transporter, free of charge. Tell us whether the car rolls and steers, whether the handbrake releases, and where it is parked. Underground car parks with low ceilings and narrow courtyards need a smaller vehicle or a winch, so mention them. The car does not need valid inspection, tax or insurance to be collected.
