Three numbers that are not the same

Asking prices on Bilbasen and DBA. These are what sellers hope for, often after weeks without a buyer. Sale prices are typically 5–15 % lower, and for cars with faults or failed inspections far lower. Use asking prices to spot the range, not to set your expectation.

Motorstyrelsen's tax valuations. The Motor Vehicle Agency publishes valuations used for registration tax on imports and exports. They describe a standard car in standard condition for tax purposes. They are not what a buyer will pay, and they ignore faults, wear and the cost of selling.

A purchase offer. This is a real number: what a specific buyer will pay for your specific car, now, with collection and paperwork included. It is the only one of the three you can actually convert into money.

What moves the price up or down

Up: valid inspection with months remaining, full service history, a popular make and model, a diesel or hybrid with documented mileage, good tyres, two keys, and a clean interior. Down: a failed or imminent inspection, warning lights, rust in the sills or subframe, a missing registration certificate, only one key, and accident history. Mileage matters, but less than condition and inspection status once a car is over ten years old.

Why the same car is worth more in Denmark than abroad — and when it is not

Danish registration tax means a used car in Denmark carries a tax value that a buyer abroad does not pay. That is why export can be worth considering for a newer, higher-value car: Motorstyrelsen refunds part of the tax when the car leaves the country (minus 15 %, and at least 8,500 DKK for a passenger car, plus a 2,250 DKK valuation fee).
