The scrapping premium in 2026
The premium rose from 2,200 DKK to 2,770 DKK on 1 January 2026, as reported by FDM. It is funded by an annual contribution all car owners pay through their insurance, and administered under the producer-responsibility scheme.
The conditions are strict. The car must be a passenger car or small van, it must be delivered to a registered, environmentally approved dismantler (autoophugger), it must be deregistered, and the premium is paid to the last registered owner. Cars that are not fully registered in Denmark, or that arrive without the required paperwork, do not qualify. The payment is made digitally after the dismantler has issued the scrapping certificate.
Scrap car or just an old car?
The premium is the same fixed amount whether the car is a rusted-out wreck or a running car with a failed inspection and a tired clutch. That is exactly why you should not accept it by default. A car that starts, has usable parts, or simply has a popular engine is often worth more to a buyer than 2,770 DKK, sometimes considerably more.
Our simple test: if the car starts and drives, or if the fault is a single known component, ask for a purchase offer first. If the offer is below the premium, you have lost nothing. If it is above, you have gained the difference. We tell you honestly which side of the line your car is on.
What happens to the paperwork
When you sell an end-of-life car to us, we handle the deregistration and, where the car is scrapped, the delivery to an approved dismantler and the scrapping certificate. You hand over the car, the keys and the registration certificate, and you receive payment at handover. You do not need to visit a number-plate operator or deal with the environmental paperwork yourself.
Two things to be aware of. First, once a car has been scrapped it cannot be re-registered, so the decision is final. Second, if the car is still registered in someone else's name, for example a former partner or a company, that must be sorted out before it can be deregistered or scrapped.
