Selling your car before leaving Denmark

Your three options, compared

1. Sell the car in Denmark. The simplest route when the car is older, has high mileage, has faults, or is worth less than the export refund would return. The buyer takes over the ownership change or deregistration, and you receive payment before you leave. This is what we do at SellCar.dk.

2. Export the car and reclaim registration tax. Denmark refunds part of the registration tax (registreringsafgift) when a car is permanently exported. It can be worthwhile for a newer, higher-value car you actually want to keep abroad. It involves an inspection, a valuation fee, handing in the plates and documenting the export within three months (details below).

3. Deregister and store it. If the car will stay in Denmark with family or a friend, hand in the number plates at a number-plate operator. Road tax and insurance stop, and the car can be re-registered later. It cannot be driven meanwhile.

Whichever you choose, do it before your CPR registration ends. Once you have left, most steps require either MitID or someone acting for you in person.

Option 1: selling in Denmark — how the paperwork works

When you sell to a business such as Autoservice Denmark, the ownership change is registered by us as the buyer. You do not need to visit a number-plate operator, and you do not need to keep the car insured until a private buyer gets around to registering it.

By contrast, in a private sale the new owner must register the change of ownership within four weekdays, according to the official Life in Denmark guidance. Until that happens, the car is still yours on paper: road tax, insurance and any fines or parking charges follow you. If you are already on a plane, chasing a private buyer from abroad is not a position you want to be in.

What you need to hand over to us: the car, all keys, and the registration certificate (registreringsattest). If the certificate is lost, tell us; a replacement can be ordered, and we will explain what is needed. If there is finance or a registered security interest on the car, that has to be settled before ownership can change.

Option 2: exporting the car and reclaiming registration tax

The Danish Motor Vehicle Agency (Motorstyrelsen) pays an export refund equal to the registration tax the car would carry as a used import, minus 15 %, and at least 8,500 DKK less for a passenger car (4,500 DKK for vans and motorcycles). The process, as described on motorst.dk:

1. Have the car pass an extended inspection at an approved inspection centre.
2. Request a valuation in the Motor Register within four weeks of the inspection. The valuation fee is 2,250 DKK.
3. Hand in the number plates at a number-plate operator.
4. Document that the car has left Denmark no later than three months after the valuation request, for example with a foreign registration certificate, a CMR consignment note or an export declaration.
5. The refund is paid to your NemKonto, typically around nine weeks later.

No refund is paid for cars more than 35 years old, cars in a condition that would not pass inspection, or cars with a registered security interest. In practice this means export rarely pays for an old or defective car: the deductions and the 2,250 DKK fee eat most or all of the refund, and you still have to get the car out of the country. For those cars, selling here is usually the better outcome.

Option 3: deregistering the car

Deregistration means handing in the number plates at a number-plate operator (nummerpladeoperatør), typically an inspection centre. According to Motorstyrelsen, the operator sets its own fee, your insurer is notified automatically, road tax stops, and any tax you have overpaid is refunded. The car may not be driven on public roads once deregistered.

Deregistering is the right choice only if the car will genuinely be used again in Denmark. A deregistered car that sits for a year loses value, batteries and tyres deteriorate, and someone will eventually have to deal with it anyway.

A realistic timeline

4–6 weeks before departure: decide which option fits. If you are selling, send us the details through the form on our homepage: registration number, make, model, year, mileage, condition and a few photos. You will get a text message from us shortly after, and we come back with an offer once we have looked at the details.

2–3 weeks before: agree the price and a collection date. We collect anywhere in Denmark free of charge, including cars that do not start. Payment is made at handover by bank transfer or MobilePay.

The last week: remove parking permits, toll tags and personal belongings, delete paired phones from the infotainment system, and gather all keys and the registration certificate. If you will already have left, a friend or colleague can hand over the car on your behalf as long as we have agreed it with you in advance.
