Sell my used car in Denmark: private sale, dealer or direct buyer?

Private sale on DBA or Bilbasen

A private listing usually returns the highest headline price, and for a well-kept, popular car under ten years old it is often worth the effort. The cost is your time: photographs, a listing fee on Bilbasen (DBA is usually free for private sellers), answering messages, test drives with strangers, and buyers who negotiate hard on the day or do not turn up at all.

You are also responsible for the paperwork. Danish law requires the new owner to re-register the car within four weekdays, but until they do, the car is still yours: road tax, insurance and any speeding or parking fines land with you. Use the Motor Register's ejerskifte flow, get the buyer's MitID confirmation, and never hand over the car on a promise to "sort the registration later".

For an older car, a car with faults, or a car that needs inspection, a private sale is rarely worth it. English-speaking buyers are a small share of the market, Danish buyers will haggle on every fault, and a car advertised for weeks loses value while you wait.

Dealer trade-in

A trade-in (byttebil) only works if you are buying your next car from the same dealer, and the trade-in price is negotiated together with the purchase price, which makes it hard to see what you actually got. Dealers are also selective: a car over 12–15 years old, with high mileage or without a valid inspection, is often refused or offered the scrap value.

If you are leaving Denmark or simply do not need another car, a trade-in is not an option at all.

Direct sale to a car buyer

A direct buyer pays a fixed price for the car as it is, collects it, and handles the registration. You give up the last few percent a private sale might return, and in exchange the sale is finished in days, with no strangers, no listing and no risk that the buyer never registers the car.

How to get a fair offer

Whoever you sell to, the same details decide the price: registration number, make, model, year, mileage, service history, known faults, and when the car was last inspected. We look the car up in the Danish vehicle register ourselves, so a registration number and a few photos are usually enough for a first offer.

Two honest rules of thumb. First, cosmetic repairs before selling almost never pay back; spend the money on nothing and disclose the scratches instead. Second, if the car has a fault, say so up front. A buyer who discovers it at collection will renegotiate on the spot, and you will be in a weaker position than if you had disclosed it.
