Selling a car in Denmark: 15 questions answered for English speakers

The car, all keys, the registration certificate (registreringsattest) and valid ID. If there is finance on the car, a settlement letter from the finance company. That is all a buyer needs from you.

For a private-to-private sale the ownership change is confirmed digitally, which in practice means MitID. If you sell to a business such as SellCar.dk, we register the change from our side and you do not need MitID.

Not until a replacement has been issued. The registered owner can order a new certificate through the Motor Register (motorst.dk); a business buyer can help with this. Never sell a car on a promise to send the certificate later.

Only once the loan is settled and the registered security interest (pant) is removed. Get a settlement figure from the finance company. In some cases we can pay the finance company directly as part of the purchase price.

Yes. A car without valid inspection can be sold; it simply cannot be driven by the new owner until it passes. A business buyer collects it on a transporter. Expect the price to reflect the repair risk.

A re-inspection (omsyn) must be done within 60 calendar days of the first inspection, according to FDM. After that the car needs a full new inspection. You can also sell the car as it stands within that window.

A car on foreign plates is registered abroad, so a Danish buyer cannot simply re-register it; it has to be imported first, which triggers Danish registration tax. In most cases it is better to sell such a car in the country it is registered in. If it is a wreck, it can still be scrapped here — ask us.

Bank transfer or MobilePay at handover is normal. Do not accept a cheque, and be cautious with large cash amounts: Danish law limits cash payments between businesses and private persons, and a bank transfer leaves a record for both sides.

The registered owner. That is why the ownership change must be registered promptly: until it is, tax, insurance and fines are still yours. When you sell to us, we register the change ourselves.

Your insurer is notified automatically when the car is re-registered or deregistered, but call them anyway to confirm the end date and any refund of premium paid in advance.

Yes, if agreed in advance. A friend or colleague can hand over keys and documents and receive payment on your behalf, as long as the sales agreement is with you as the registered owner.

A fixed 2,770 DKK (2026) paid when a deregistered car is delivered to an approved dismantler. It goes to the last registered owner. A car that still runs or has usable parts is usually worth more than the premium — ask for an offer before scrapping.

A private sale usually takes weeks. A direct sale to us is normally agreed within a day or two and collected within the week, at a time that suits you.

A leased car belongs to the leasing company and cannot be sold by you; contact them about early termination. A company-owned car can be sold by an authorised signatory of the company; the ownership change is registered in the company's name.
